Going through the Motions

As the excitement of the holidays and a new year starts to dwindle and we settle into a comfortable routine, it’s easy to just go through the motions of everyday life. We can get sucked into a hectic and chaotic schedule and not even realize why we’re doing what we’re doing.

That’s how Kyle & I used to live for many years …  Fortunately, we now have had things slow down a bit. 

But this doesn’t come without problems, insecurities and fears.  Lately, I have been feeling a lot of guilt that I should be doing more, producing more and seeing more results – in everything I do.

Enjoy the Different Seasons

Our pastor continues to remind us that God created time, which includes days, months and seasons.  There is variation throughout these seasons.  There is a time for busyness and there is a time for rest. 

We live in the midwest so it’s our winter season.  It’s dark, it’s cold, and it’s quiet. 

And for Kyle & I who are used to go-Go-GO!  It’s difficult to get used to this quiet season.

Slow Down

When you are used to being on the go, it’s hard to slow down.  I want to “do” something … I want to finish the boat projects that we started in the fall, but it’s too cold and sometimes too wet to be on the boat right now.  I want to learn to snowshoe and go cross-country skiing, but there hasn’t been enough snow to stick around long enough to try these activities. 

Learning to Be Still

So … I’m learning to be more at rest, and filled with more peace.  I’m working on embracing a simple, quiet lifestyle at the moment. 

I’m spending time appreciating and taking care of our home.  I’m focusing on being healthier and maintaining a consistent exercise routine.  I’m slowly working on learning new software for photo and video editing.  I’m trying new skills such as sewing and sanding for ‘off the boat’ projects in our garage.

Practicing to Be Still

Learning something new doesn’t just happen.  It takes time and countless hours of practice.  Often I want to check something off a list and move on to the next thing, but there’s no line item for when I’ve completed the learning.  And sometimes it’s never done. It may take a lifetime to learn some lessons.

So … what helps me find rest in the winter seasons of life?

Taking time for daily Bible study, meditation and prayer is a MUST.  This helps me get my mind right and my focus off of just me. 

Next, I actively look for positive things to think about – specifically focusing on what I’m grateful for.  Again, this helps to transform my thinking.

I also find being in nature and walking outside can instantly change my mood.  Fresh air and physical activity is a great combination. 

I’m slowly learning to embrace the winter season and quiet moments instead of rushing to the next “thing”.
