What grill should we get?

Not too long after Kyle & I moved into our first house, we bought a grill for those easy summer grilling out meals. Kyle’s dad, Scott, was partial to Weber Grills because of their commitment to quality with the 10-year warranty program and that you could buy replacement parts and fix the grill if anything broke. Well, of course, Kyle did his research, and although it was more expensive than the generic or other branded gas grills that you could buy at Lowes, Home Depot or Menards, we decided to buy a gas Weber Grill.

Buy a Weber

We’ve had our Weber Genesis Silver gas grill for over 15 years and moved it to our 4 different houses and we’ve had very little problems with it. Only recently did the igniter stop working, but we were able to purchase a new igniter kit for our model. Kyle hasn’t had time to fix it yet so he just uses a utility lighter to start the grill.

Secure & Protect It

One of the ways that we’ve kept our grill in such good condition and lasting so long was with a Weber Grill cover to protect it from weather and critters. This has seen more wear and tear lately, and it is so used that it doesn’t quite fit on the grill as good as it used to … oh well, it served its purpose!

Grilling is for every season!

Every spring, summer and fall (and occasionally in the winter), we’ll cook regular meals on the gas grill. It’s very nice to use when cooking quick meals for friends and family and hanging out together on our backyard deck. I’ve put together a complete, but quick and easy meal [link to food] below that you can make one evening – especially if you are rushed for time as you are getting into the hang of your new ‘back-to-school’ schedule, but still want to prolong your evenings outside.

Easy Meal to Grill

There are countless meals to cook on the grill, so I’ll just share one of our favorite meals to cook: Burgers, Corn-on-the-Cob, and Peaches with Ice Cream for dessert.

Burgers

What you need:
  • Ground beef (1 lb. will make 4 patties)
  • Buns
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Optional Toppings & Condiments:  Cheese, Ketchup, Mustard, Relish, Pickles, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion
raw ground beef patties
Steps:
  1. Work ground beef together and add a little salt & pepper
  2. Flatten beef into patties (It is best to refrigerate for ~15 minutes before cooking so the patties don’t fall apart.)
  3. Open grill & propane, start grill and close lid.  Let it heat up to 350° (~ 15 minutes).
  4. Put patties on the grill and cook for ~10 min on either side (or until the juice turns clear).
  5. Optional:  Add cheese to burgers and melt for a few minutes.
  6. Remove and serve with optional toppings & condiments.
Estimated Time:

35 – 40 minutes.

burgers and corn on the grill

Corn-on-the-cob

What you need:
  • Corn-on-the-cob (qty 1 for each person or to share)
Steps:

There’s always corn at the grocery store in the summer (we’re in Indiana after all!), but I got this sweet corn from the Mick Klug Farmstand in New Buffalo, MI. It was delicious!  We have an easy way to grill corn-on-the-cob.

  1. We just put the whole unshucked corn on the grill, cook for ~30 minutes, and rotate it several times until the husks are crispy.
  2. Un-shuck the corn after grilling, but be careful!  It’s very hot! You may need gloves 🙂
  3. Add butter, salt & pepper to taste.
Estimated Time:

30 – 35 minutes, so add this to the grill before you start the burgers.

Additional Sides

You could always add a salad, pasta or potato salad or even potato chips to your meal if you want more food.

I added a leftover power bowl from lunch at Casey’s in New Buffalo. Be sure to save room for dessert!

Peaches with Ice Cream

What you need:
  • Peaches (1/2 for each person)
  • Vanilla Ice Cream
Steps:
  1. Cut peaches in half and remove the pit.
  2. Cook on the grill at 300° – 350° for ~10 – 12 minutes on both sides.
  3. Put peaches in the bottom of a bowl, and add a few scoops of vanilla ice cream on top.
  4. Enjoy!  Yum!

Estimated Time:

20 – 25 minutes.

⚠️ A word of caution ⚠️

Don’t forget to turn off the grill and close the propane tank valve when you are finished grilling! There have been a few times over the years that we either left the grill on or forgot to close up the propane tank. Fortunately, we did not have any accidents occur when this happened, but we needed to refill the propane sooner than we should have! Good thing we have a #simplesolution for that too! 🙂
